BACKGROUND OF CULTURE SILO
In the year 1931 Oy Toppila cellulose factory was first industrial project designed by Alvar Aalto
When Toppila was planned for neighborhood usage in early 1990, main industrial buildings were protected. Majority of the buildings found another use, but all plans on Silo failed. City of Oulu reserved Silo for Culture Power Station, with only one condition - Plans had to be ready in 2009 and Silo had to be in use in September 2011.

Culture Power Station has planned to change Silo to be a enviroment, community and media art center. Transformation is intended to be based on cultural ecologic plan of the community.
Subject of my thesis is cultural ecologic renovation plan for Culture Silo. I studied Toppila history and architecture, Silo planning principle, construction engineering and condition of the Silo. I also studied Alvar Aaltos 1920-1930 designs.
To achieve Culture Power Stations design principle I studied cultural ecology, community art and sustainable development. My working method was creative designing and cooperation with Culture Power Station as well as other involving groups. Silo renovation plans had many things to be taken account: This structure had only one function in the past and now it had to work as flexible multicultural activity center. I made only few changes on the exterior of the Silo.
Silo consists of three silo towers, and I planned each silo with different function and structural changes. Plans are made for step by step implementation. It fulfills requirements made by Culture Power Station.
